Issue #86, May, 2010

Estimating
We submitted revised pricing for the Becker Cogeneration Biomass Storage building in April. The building is now 200' x 500' with a 54' eave height. We are waiting for some more revisions to the building but we should be able to finalize them and place the order with Steelway in early May.

Ken submitted his tender for the new Toyota Dealership and we have not heard a word about it. The rumours on the street are not good ones but they are what we suspected and this was not a fair tender, perhaps simply a price check. Too bad, it would have been a nice job.

We submitted our pricing for the ten pre-engineered steel buildings in Miramichi, New Brunswick. We have not heard anything back from them.

The steel fabrication building that we priced several months ago appears to be coming closer to reality. It was a 20,000 square foot building with two overhead cranes. Our portion was the supply and erection of the building and cranes. Hopefully, more on this one next month.

We submitted our budget pricing for the 100,000 square foot building for a former client and they must now crunch the numbers to make sure it is feasible for them to proceed. Let's hope so!

We had to submit a quick budget price for a proposal to an out of town company who is considering opening up in the Sault. The building is 100,000 square feet with a 32 foot eave height. I had Steelway punch out a quick set of drawings and I did a quick budget price and a schedule, all in about 3 hours!

Tim submitted his pricing for the remaining concrete work at Praxair and is working on a budget price for some concrete work for Brookfield Power in Wawa.

We also submitted some budget pricing for an addition to an existing car dealership and several other smaller projects.

Looks like this will be a year of concrete foundations and Steelway buildings!

New Employees
We now have quite a few of our crew back to work and should have them all back within the next few weeks.

Becker Cogeneration Biomass Storage Building

This one is still on hold and has had a few more revisions. More news next month.

Becker Cogeneration Building and Equipment Foundations

John M is the Super on this project and his current crew of 12 includes Bob H, JR, Craig T, Jerry C, John B, Jorge S, Jake M, Nick W, Mike B, Mike B (another one), Lee C and Bill M. He has also hired two guys from Hornepayne and one guy from White River. They have been building form panels for the pier caps and the grade beam walls. They formed the pier caps and Harris Rebar (working for the Owner) installed the rebar. They poured 92 cm of concrete on April 22nd. The concrete came from Hearst. Tim is the PM on this one.

Ellsin Environmental Tire Recycling Plant

Ken, the PM on this job, submitted the application for the building permit and is now waiting for the permit before we can start. The building floor plan has had several revisions and Ken is trying to keep up with the changes. He is working with Rob Maier from Ellsin to try and reduce the overall cost of the project. We are hoping for the permit by the end of April and then we can get started. The Steelway building will be delivered on May 31st.

Blind River Public Works Buildings, Sal-Dan Developments

The Steelway building deliveries have been pushed back as the foundations won't be ready for us. The revised delivery dates are now May 10th for the Public Works garage, May 25th for the Cold Storage building and June 7th for the Salt/Sand Storage building. Clinton has been working with Sal-Dan on the approval drawings as there have been a few interference problems with wall openings. Clint's the PM on this project.

Adler Moving Warehouse

Super Sid has returned from vacation and is now on site Clinton's his PM. Sid's crew consists of Mike M, Scott G, Gerry B, Trevor M and Dwayne. The foundations have been completed and backfilling will be starting. The Steelway building is scheduled for delivery on Tuesday, May 4th and we will start erecting the building right away. General Contracting is doing all of the sitework, DMC Reinforcing did the rebar, Advance Interiors will be doing the metal studs and drywall, DNM Plumbing will be doing the plumbing and the in-floor heating system, Henderson Metal will be doing the ventilation systems and Permanent Electric will be doing the electrical. This project is starting to take shape quickly.

Praxair T900 Oxygen Plant

KKC is still on site with Don C and Jason. They are doing some cost plus work while waiting to hear about who was the low bidder on the concrete work.

POD Generating Solar Farm
All of the work on this small job has been completed except for the plowing of the fields.

Bob Ryckman, our Safety Director will be the Presenter for the Construction Association's free information session regarding Bill 168, Workplace Violence Legislation which comes into effect on June 15th. The session will be held on Tuesday, May 4th at the Construction Association.

Ryan C and Zak S are now attending the first level of Carpenter's Apprenticeship Schooling at Cambrian College from April 26th to June 18th. Chris M has just finished his course.

We held our Management Safety Meeting on April 29th and one of the items discussed was our Health & Safety Committee. Seems that a few of the Committee members will be in Hornepayne for a while and will not be able to attend. That only leaves Clinton, Gerry B and Scott G to attend. Hmmm!

No report this month.

CONVENTIONS & SOCIAL EVENTS
Nothing much to report this month except that we are getting buried in donation requests for golf tournaments! We have discussed they we should form our own golfing tour group.

D's Kimmie entered a team in the recent 3 on 3 hockey tournament and provided us with some pictures of the "Mike Moore & Sons" team.

Congratulations
To MM&S for being presented with the Humane Society's Appreciation Award at their Annual Board Meeting. Although we couldn't attend the meeting, Joyce Khoum dropped by our office to present it to us. We have been the major sponsor for their Annual Cause for Paws Walkathon and we will be again this year with a $1,000.00 donation. Our four legged and feathered friends need love and care too. Thanks goes out to Joyce and all the staff at the Humane Society.

To MM&S - Because of all of our blood donors giving of their time we were again presented with the Canadian Blood Services "Donor Recognition Award" for exceeding our 2009 donation goal of 50 units, we donated 56. They presented it to us at the Partner Recognition Reception at the Marconi Hall along with several other local companies. I would personally like to thank all of our employees that make the effort to donate. You are the GREATEST, you have no idea of the number of people you have been able to add years to their lives AND these people cannot begin to thank you enough. There is a fabulous video of them expressing there appreciation and what YOU have given back to them, LIFE!!!

Tibits

Here are a couple of good ones from Shauna. Sh always attaches a similar tidbit when she emails out our daily Job Locator, Scarlett and Fern don't. Now why is that ladies?

#1 A man walks into a bar and a lady recognizes him as the famous golfer, Tiger Woods. They start to talk and eventually go back to his place. They start to kiss and he takes off his shirt.
On his arm he has a tattoo that says REEBOK. "What's that for?" the lady questions. "Oh, I have this so that when I'm on Tour, people will see my tattoo and Reebok pays me."
Then he takes off his trousers and on his leg he has a tattoo that says NIKE. "What's that?" the lady questions again. "Just like the Reebok tattoo, I get paid when this tattoo is seen on Tour."
Then he drops his underwear and on his private part he has a tattoo that says AIDS. The lady screams: "Don't tell me you have AIDS!" He replies: "No, no…!!! Calm down, it will say ADIDAS in a minute…!"

#2 Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really upset.
She told him "Tomorrow morning I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!"
The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway.
Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway and brought the box back into the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.
Bob has been missing ever since!

We now have 613,455 man hours with no Lost Time Injuries (LTI) or a total of 4,240 days. We only have 386,545 man hours to go to reach our goal of 1,000,000 accident free hours.

As one of the major sponsors of the Sault Steelers, we got to host their trophies for several days at our office. Steve Roberts brought them over and set them up as you can see by the picture. Congratulations to Seth Cond who will be replacing Barry Rushon as the new Coach of the Steelers. Seth certainly has big shoes to fill after the Steelers dominating championship last year. We are even hearing a rumour that Steve Roberts may play for one more year now!

John M was kind enough to give me the Picture of the Month for this newsletter. It seems that while traveling to Hornepayne on April 25th our crew came around a corner and observed three moose crossing the highway. The moose made it safely across and the driver (one of our employee's) continued on around the curve he came upon another large moose standing in the middle of the road. He slowed down and the moose started to move running down the road. The driver slowly continued on and the moose suddenly turned and ran right into the truck caving in the hood. The good news is that none of our guys were injured, the moose walked away and it will only cost us $1,400.00 to replace the hood! Given the amount of highway hours and miles our crews have driven (Deep River, Hearst, Point Au Baril, Arnstein, Wawa, White River, Nipigon, Kirkland Lake, Timmins, Sudbury, Hornepayne) we are fortunate that this is the only accident that's been incurred. Bob R has requested that John (as the Super) complete an incident report and do an accident investigation. See the Picture of the Month for details.

Here is a good one we just found out through a WSIB audit last month. How many people out there are aware of "Common Earnings?" It is WSIB's Operational Policy 14-02-08. I have attached a PDF copy of it. It cost us $18,777.00 to find out the hard way. If you have more than one rate group for your firm, then I hope you know all about Common Earnings. You basically have to report your administrative earnings as a percentage of the earnings in each of your rate groups. That means if we are doing a lot of steel erection, then my secretaries and everyone else in the office will be paying a portion of WSIB at the $16.50/$100 rate even though they are simply sitting in a chair and typing! We were using the 723 rate of $4.35/$100. And they told us that this creates a "fair and level playing field". Who are they trying to kid?

Steelway's 3rd edition of "Beyond the Box" has been published and I have attached it for your info. This one is on the use of Parapet Bands to dress up the exterior of the building.

Fern and I along with Barney, Storm and Coors "the cat" are hoping to fly into our Tribble Lake Resort on May 19th for the long weekend. We are concerned about the water level as it was down 4 feet last fall and we did not get much snow this winter. Steve Dale from Airdale will be flying into Gavor Lake and he is going to "buzz" Tribble to check the lake level. Hopefully we can still get the floatplane up to our dock.

Congratulations to Dwayne and Kim on the purchase of their new "Yacht." Guess we know what Dwayne & Kim will be doing on the weekends. We can only hope that it will be a nice warm summer so Kimmie can lie on her leopard towel and not have to wear a leopard winter jacket while doing so. Let's all keep our fingers crossed.

What happens when a moose collides with a truck!
