Estimating
No word on the Fantasy Island project. Perhaps we scared them away with our budget price. Derek is not going to be happy about this, he has his canoe ready to go to work and Mya is picking out room colours for their villa.

Mike submitted pricing for the T-900 Compressor building tender to Praxair quite some time ago and has not received authority to place the order yet. There have been some revisions to the building and we are waiting for them to be re-priced. The price of steel is increasing on a weekly basis and Steelway would really like to lock this building in. Mike submitted pricing for all of the foundation work in late April, there are over 2,100 cubic yards of concrete to place. One involves the Cold Box, identical to the one we did at Inco, 550 cubic yards in one continuous pour. We are now in negotiations with Praxair and it is looking quite favourable for us. We have a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 7th in our Boardroom with Praxair. Hope Louis is there! More news next month.

We have not heard any news on the Nobel project. We were hoping to know by now so that we can plan out our workload and manpower. Hopefully we will hear something this month.

Tom continues to submit pricing to ASI for various projects. His tenders include the Bent Foundations, a design-build Maintenance shop for Iron Making, the baghouse foundations for the No. 6 and 7 blast furnaces and the list just keeps growing. Tom is working full time on SSI tenders. He hopes to hear about the No. 7 Baghouse foundations any day now.
Tom has been informed that we have been awarded the five Bent Foundations. Great job Tom! He has worked very hard on this one and I think this is the third or fourth time he has priced it. He has more patience than most. Tom, now you need to get the No. 7 baghouse foundations to go with it. Then we can get Ken out of the office and back into the field.

We have been informed that the Black Road Mini Storage Complex will be delayed until this fall. It is a part of another project and the Owner is in the process of arranging financing for the entire project.

We are still in negotiations with PGG. Mike should be flying to Albuquerque this month to meet with PPG to finalize the scope of work, the schedule and a contract, hopefully!

Mike is still waiting to hear about the two large buildings he priced. The Client is still working on the concept and has indicated that the project is still moving along in a positive direction.

We also priced a very nice project last month, that being a 7,200 square foot building with a 45' eave height including a 35 tonne and a 20 tonne overhead crane running on the same runway. The cranes can run independent of each other by using the sliding pendant control or they can work together as one crane using the radio controlled transmitter. We are hoping to receive the approval to proceed very soon.

The Student Doctor's Residence has been placed on hold again. We are not too sure what the status of this project is and are not confident that it will proceed in the near future. Too bad, I know that everyone, including Tom has put a lot of effort and hours into it.

Steelway Building Systems buildings seem to be the hot item for us right now. As of the writing of this newsletter, Mike is in negotiations for an 18,000 square foot building in Sudbury which was priced earlier this year. We just have to confirm the price and order it. Building foundations are included with this project. We have drawings for a 42,000 square foot building for the same client. It has 4 overhead cranes and two jib cranes and the foundations are included. We are waiting for drawings for a 7,000 square foot building just south of Sudbury on Highway 69 for the same client again. In addition we have been asked to price a 4,000 square foot house for a very good client; we don't do residential but will make an exception in this case.

We are still in negotiations with a farm group from Azilda and Dwayne stopped in to see them on his way back from Deep River. They are very anxious to get started and want the building completed by the end of August.

Mike also submitted pricing for a small addition to Algo Machine Shop in Echo Bay. We have another larger building with overhead cranes to price and it is in the Sault. It will be a design-build, turn-key project and the Owner is anxious for the price.

Hey Rolf, we know that we will make the Steelway Million Dollar Club this year but why stop there; let's go for the Two or Three Million Dollar Club + 34 cents! What is the limit?

New Employees
Fern, KKC and Wayne S held interviews with 12 candidates on Apr. 22nd & 23rd; Ken James put them all through our MM&S safety orientation on Sat. Apr. 26th. The outcome was that we have hired five new employees; we welcome Doug B, Jason Y, Kevin S, Paul V and Ryan J to our team. Our CET Sault College student also starts in May and we would like to extend that same welcome to Dan B. ALL employees, new and old, are reminded to work safely and refuse any work that they consider to be unsafe!

We have also been talking to a potential candidate from Toronto regarding a position as a Project Coordinator. He graduated from George Brown College last year and is well versed with EdgeBuilder software.

OPP Forensic Lab

This project is just about complete. We have to install the second lift of asphalt to the parking lot, do the final grading around the building and complete the landscaping. We have removed our trailers and turned the building over to the CSI guys (OPP). Wayne and his Subs have just about completed all of the deficiencies. This project was quite a challenge and Wayne, along with Blair, Clinton and the Subtrades are all glad that it is over. We hope the CSI staff will enjoy their new home for years to come. CSI Las Vegas here comes CSI Sault!!!!!!

Collegiate Heights Retirement Home Addition

KKC and Randy along with Andy M are pounding away on this project. KKC has requested more carpenters and we have sent him Scott G and brother Donnie. Ontario Concrete Finishing has poured the gypcrete toppings to the second and third floors. The ceilings are being sprayed on most floors. KKC was working on having the mockup suite completed but was held up by deliveries. We have moved into the link and have started the renovations to the existing building. Subtrades on site are Citywide Electric, CB Home Installations, Ideal Colour, Mobile Glass, Superior Tile, DNM Plumbing, OCF, Steel Speed and Kitchen & Home Centre. Ken will hopefully be able to start cleaning up and grading the exterior as soon as it dries up.

AELP Co-Gen Foundations

John M and his ever increasing crew consisting of Bob H, Gerry B, Craig T, JR S, Nick M, Jerry C, Jake M, Wayne M, Cal D, Cris P, Dan M, Jake K, Jorge S, Tyson D and John B along with the OCF crew are working diligently on the foundations. Chris M has returned from his apprenticeship schooling and Andy B has returned from his time off; they have rejoined the crew. The guys have been stripping the Turbine Table forms and packing them up to ship back to Efco Forms as well as working on the cooling tower and sump, stairs, grouting of baseplates, patching and sack rubbing the concrete, the switchgear floor, dearator floors and V-drains. We have been given more work and should be there until the end of July. Our team has now poured over 2300 cm of concrete. Pictures of this project would be a huge asset but unfortunately are not allowed. The phrase that we all know says "that a picture says a thousand words"; these pictures would say a million +!!!

GoodLife Fitness Club, North Bay

We have finalized the foot print for the North Bay GoodLife Fitness Club addition. We received approval to hire Caughill Consulting Services to do the Architectural review and now we have our team assembled. We have had several conference calls which have addressed a few questions and we are now proceeding with the working drawings. Tim Buchan will be the Project Manager and Super Sid will be the Superintendent. We are pushing hard to get this project underway by June 2nd. Since we have been having so many conference calls with GLF, Mike has purchased a new "conference call" phone and it works quite well, and so it should for what it cost. And just so everyone knows that there is an actual GoodLife job in North Bay, we have attached some pictures of the existing building.

Husky Station Rebuild

Wayne S (our Superintendent on this project) and General Contracting took over this site on April 7th. The building came down on April 11th and the demolition is now complete. It took a while to do all of the sorting before shipping it to the dump. General is now removing the contaminated soils along with the cess pond. Removal of the existing foundations and fuel tanks is underway. MOL paid us a visit and everything was fine. The Police Services Bomb Squad called and wanted to practice a forced entry with explosives on the building before we demolished it; but unfortunately our schedule couldn't accommodate them. Hopefully on our next project we can.

Howard Avery Construction Building
Work is fast and furious on this project now and the site is quite congested. We had Nick, Phil, John B and Terry working on site in early April but at present have only have Terry and Phil. They have completed the interior liner panel and are trimming it out. Keith Avery has numerous subtrades on site completing the rest of the work and they concrete floors are now complete. Our guys should be complete in a few more weeks. Hopefully, the ground will dry up and we can get the manlifts outside to complete the trim. The ground is very soft right now as you can see from the picture. The MOL visited the site and all was well. We are anxiously waiting for Chris Cooper to arrive on site and begin construction of his new Gym.

CTC Store Erection, Hearst
Jason and his revised crew consisting of Ryan C, Justin, Tyler, Len, Jeremy and Paul are finally working in better weather, no more ice and snow although it did snow one day and they got rained out one day. They have completed all of the wall cladding except at the Garden Centre. They started the roofing on April 16th and were complete by April 22nd. Good job guys! They have the Garden Centre to erect and the interior liner panel to install plus all of the trims. We had to shuffle the schedule around a bit as Jason attended the OGCA Symposium in Collingwood. Jason hopes to have this project wrapped up by the 3rd or 4th week of May. I am sure the guys will all be happy to be back home.

CTC Store Erection, Deep River
Dwayne's crew is smaller now; he has Scott M, Trevor, Tyler M, Glen and Jeff. Dwayne has completed the roof and has most of the wall cladding complete. He had hoped to have the roof seamed but had problems with the seamer. DP had also hoped to have the Garden Centre erected but when they went to stand the steel, they discovered the foundation was out by about 7". The GC had it rectified and Dwayne can now complete that portion. He will also be installing the interior liner panel and hopes to be complete by the 3rd week of May.

Water Tower Inn - Casey's Restaurant
As we mentioned last month, this project had not started but that it would be complete before the May newsletter. That is exactly what took place. Sid started this project on Monday, March 31st. Sid worked very closely with our newest Superintendent and Scheduler, JJ Hilsinger, along Ken M, Clinton, Derek (Black Loon Millworks), Carmine (Advanced Interiors), the S & T Group and several other trades people. Sid was able to almost complete the Casey's Grill Bar transformation on Monday, April 21st. It was a wild place and tempers did flare up at times, but the overall result was accomplished. Our congratulations to Sid, Clinton, Derek, Carmine and the other trades for a job well done. Our congratulations to JJ and Donna Hilsinger and best wishes on the new restaurant, it is a very nice establishment. Please drop by and check it out. JJ has one more project left for us to begin soon in the bar. We are thinking that he should put a restaurant in the actual Sault Ste. Marie water tower with windows all around and a piano bar or perhaps an oyster bar! Hey Sid, all of your pictures are very dark, perhaps we need to sign you up for a photography course.

Tools
Why is it that we buy safety equipment, gear, etc, we never read the manufacturers instruction or if it is missing, never request said instructions be sent?

Of recent there have been situations where I have been steered in this direction to request the information. Either it was because I did not know something or I wanted to know how the manufacturer instructed us to use it properly and "SAFELY". The latest one to spark my curiosity was watching contractors using Powder Activated Tools.

Yes you must be trained in their use and be able to provide proof of training, but what was the training; has anyone ever looked at the manufacturers instructions, are they still in the case with the cleaning supplies and gun? To my surprise most users had never looked at the instructions, they where supposedly trained and shown how to operate the tool. Most did not know how to clean it or even take it apart to clean and yet the manufacturer's instructions state you should inspect and clean it prior to use. There are internal parts like the piston that can become bent and damaged. There are retaining clips that become bent or broken and require replacing for safety reasons. The internal parts build up carbon deposits and this will affect the fastener penetration and safe operation and must be cleaned. Why do most rental facilities remove the cleaning tools and manuals from the gun cases? Are they checking to see if you are trained and competent to use the tool? In most of the owned and rented tools I have looked at, the cleaning tools and instruction manuals were missing.

Should the Ministry of Labour Inspectors be checking the tools to see if they are clean, in good condition and that they include the instruction manuals and cleaning kits? They check Aerial Lifts for instruction manuals and inspection certificates, why are Powder Activated Tools any different?

Please inspect your Powder Activated Tools for the above and test your certified operators for their level of knowledge and skills of not only operating the tool, but inspecting and cleaning it.

Another tool to review and look at the manufactures' instructions is your rope grabs. More on this next month.
The Sault Ste. Marie Construction Association hosted its 2nd Annual Training Week, running from April 21st to 25th. This made various training venues available to the construction firms in our area. Everything from First Aid, WHMIS, H&S Orientation, Fall Arrest, to Aerial Manlift and much more. Many training courses where free, some did have a cost to them. Many agencies donated space, material and/or facilitators helping us make this a success once again.

Thanks to all the firms, organizations and trainers that have made this a success. We trained about 330 people this year.

Hats off to the Construction Safety Association of Ontario for all their assistance, they are always there to assist us in any possible way. A special thanks to Keith Berriman of the CSAO and their consultants.

We would like to maintain this as an annual event and my wish is to keep it as cost effective and affordable as possible for the various construction firms in our area. In order to accomplish this I think we need to look for more donations of space, equipment, material and instructors. Many donate their time and material, some come from out of town to assist us, a few will offer their services if they are paid. Let's see what we can do and keep the costs down.

A special thank you to The Crosby Group Inc. and Sling Choker for coming in and putting on a rigging awareness seminar, two years in a row and a very good course.

Partners for Life - Canadian Blood Services
Mike Moore & Sons Construction is proud to be a Partner for Life.

If a single donor can save lives……Imagine what your organization can do.
I would like to remind all of our staff that can donate to get out and donate, we do have a challenge to meet.

"We need you! Work Safely"

We sent Jake M to the Boom Truck Certification 0-8 tons and now Jake needs to upgrade his license to a class "DZ." Then he will have to work with Gerry B in our yard to get more experience on using our boom truck before heading out into the field.

Ted Newberry, Rick Thomas and I met in April to discuss some educational courses that we want to run. One of them may be the OGCA Gold Seal course called "Concrete Construction" and I have attached a course outline. Ted was going to be at the OGCA offices and meet with Julie to review the course material. This course is a 12 week course (36 hrs) but we thought we could run it on a Friday and a Saturday for two consecutive weekends. There are also several other courses such as Steel Construction, Electrical Systems, Mechanical Systems and several others. Stay tuned for more news. If this sounds interesting, call Rick or Tammy at our Association and let them know your thoughts or interest.

Conventions & Social Events
The 5th Annual OGCA Symposium was held at Blue Mountain on April 10th, 11th and 12th and once again was a huge success. We had 630 participants! We took Sid, Jason & Nancy and Clinton & Tessa. The suites were great and everyone had a good time. We even attended a bachelorette party at Windy O'Neils bar compliments of Nancy's friend. Doug Kearns from GCNA (our bonding company) was in attendance along with the infamous Gerry Russ from Aon (our bonding agent). Doug, we are still wondering why all of the staff at Windy's knows you on a first name basis? Special thanks to Jim Ilkay of Econstruction for his "as usual" great party on Thursday night. I believe some of us remember being there! Although Fern and I were a bit nervous sitting on the "President's Panel" we were informed that we did a good job. We could have been better prepared had we known Geoff Smith (Ellis Don) and Paul Cocker (MacKay Cocker) had prepared 6 page presentations and that Francis Pomerleau (Pomerleau Inc.) had prepared a power point presentation! Fernie and I did not prepare anything and had to nervously wing; she did very well with passing the microphone back and forth to me (Mike). Surprisingly, to both of us, we received several compliments on our sincerity and "down to earth" attitudes throughout the remainder of the seminar. Guess we don't need to attend those Dale Carnegie courses we had scheduled. Ger, Fern thanks you for addressing the questions she couldn't answer. Doug, Fern is still wondering "Really, how do all the staff at Windy's know you"?

I have included several pictures, courtesy of Mary Wademan from the OGCA. The Panelist pictures include from right to left, Geoff Smith (President of Ellis Don), Francis Pomerleau, (President of Pomerleau Construction), Paul Cocker (President of MacKay Cocker), Fern Moore (CFO of MM&S) and Mike Moore (me, President of MM&S). Quite the panel of heavy weights from our construction industry, at least the first three were!

Sid played "Joe Subtrade" at the MOL mock trail on Saturday and did a great job. Sid's cell phone went off at least six times and everyone thought that was part of the act. It wasn't and we are considering Cell Phone lessons for Sidney.

We generally rotate our upper management people and take field employees each year; Sid was so impressed he says he will be returning next year even if he has to pay the full stroke himself. Sid attended almost every seminar there was and turned into a babbling wealth of knowledge! He especially enjoyed Jim Mathis, the motivational speaker.

I got to meet and introduce the Senior Vice President, Project Services of ORC, Mike Greidanus and Brian Watkinson, Principal-Strategies 4 Impact who works with the ORC. They held a seminar on the changes that ORC have recently adopted. We had a brief discussion regarding the OPP Forensics Lab in the Sault and the problems we encountered. Clinton met Robert (BOB) Neally, Manager-Capitol Construction for ORC and had a similar discussion. We hope it was very productive.

We also met Nadia Nincevic, our Account Executive and Jason Woerner, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Econstruction at their party. The Econstruction people are great and they always throw a terrific party. I was introduced to Clint Kissoon who is an instructor at George Brown College and President of FENAK Estimating Services. I met Doug Baird, Senior Vice President, Mid Market Construction Services Manager for Aon. Hey Moe, Doug says he wants my insurance business. Speaking of Moe Parisotto, our insurance guy from Nexus, he was there and sat with us during dinner one night; Moe guess you discovered how busy and intense the OGCA Symposiums are.

I also saw and chatted with a long time buddy that I hadn't seen in years, Leo Bussoli, who is a Superintendent with Tribury Construction. Leo used to work with me at Pierman Construction in the 1980's. He introduced me to Pio Cerilli and Rob Huzij, both who work for TESC Contracting. I also found out that Pio is the current President of the Sudbury Construction Association. Since I am the current President of the Sault Ste. Marie Construction Association, we had to discuss some of our issues. I met Mark Buckshon, President of Construction News who did a feature article on our company last year.

Let's see, who did I meet and forget to mention, sorry if I forgot you, but there were a lot of people there. It was great to meet all the people mentioned above.

Mike Moore & Sons Construction's Final Donation Status

2008 Donation Goal 100
Donations to Date 9 (not correct)

The CBS website is now up and running, but they are still having problems. Mike Moore & Sons shows up as having only 9 donations to date which is incorrect. CBS is working on this problem, seems they have lost the names of a lot of our team. We have the highest pledge amount at 100 and one of the lowest donations to date, hope this is totally wrong. With all of the employees we have now, all they would have to do is give two donations and we would be well over our pledge. Let's get out there and donate guys. Thanks to those faithful ones that have. Congratulations to Alexander Henry High School and St. Mary's College for becoming the other two Partners for Life from the Sault. How come the Sudbury area has 20 Partners? Why does the Sault not have more Partners? Please talk to your employees and join the Partners for Life program.

**Warning- this joke could be offensive to some and funny to others!**
When George first noticed that his penis was growing larger and staying erect longer, he was delighted, as was his wife. But after several weeks, his penis had grown to nearly twenty inches. George became quite concerned. He was having problems dressing and even walking. So he and his wife went to see a prominent urologist. After an initial examination, the doctor explained to the couple that, although rare, George's condition could be fixed through corrective surgery. "How long will George be on crutches?" the wife asked anxiously. "Crutches? Why would he need crutches?" responded the surprised doctor. "Well" said the wife coldly, "You're gonna lengthen his legs, aren't you?"

Now on the lighter side, Barney and Storm (our beagles) wanted me to mention the recent news article about Beagles. Beagles are now being trained (800 hours) to be able to sniff out bed bugs whether they are hiding in a mattress, a couch or a wall. They can also indicate if carpenter ants are nearby. They are using the "bug sniffing beagles" in Metro Vancouver hotels and high-rises. Hey, the best thing about it is that they are "bed bugs," exactly where our guys like to be, in bed. They already have their 800 hours in!

I met briefly with Dan Padden of Construction Safety Solutions and he showed me the computer testing course software he is developing in conjunction with Aecon. Dan sent me a preview CD and Ken and I are very impressed and anxious to see the finished product. I believe there will be various pricing options available and to purchase it outright will be about $3,000.00 and that is the option that we will be taking.
Clinton, Sid and I sat up until the wee hours of the morning on Friday night at the Symposium discussing and solving all of the problems the construction industry faces or so we thought. We may have had a few drinks as well but we think we had a good time! Remember, what goes on at Blue Mountain stays at Blue Mountain (see the picture of the month)

Mike Moore & Sons Construction has been chosen as Company of the Month by Great Northern Resort & Conference Centre for the month of May. Thank you very much to them. Any of our out of town guests will receive special benefits during their stay and we will get to display a banner and promotional items in their Lobby plus they will display our company name on their marquee. They will also host a coffee break in our office.

We were also featured in the Northern Ontario Construction News with an article about our Safety program on page 3. See the attached article.

I am still working with Steve Riddell from Ellis Don regarding the development of the safety module on EdgeBuilder. Hey Steve, how is it coming?

We are hoping to complete our Human Resources Policy this month; it has been quite a long time in the development stages. It is a very thorough document and covers just about everything you could ask with regards to Human Resources and our company policies.

While Dwayne and Tyler were driving past a house under construction in Deep River, they noticed a rather frightening safety violation. Tyler insisted that they turn around and get some pictures for our readers. As you can see from the pictures, the scaffold was tied off to the deck handrail but the extension ladder was not tied off to anything. Scary stuff!

I would like to thank Gavin McLeod for hosting our first "Blackberry School." Gavin has been working for RIM and has all the tricks of the trade. He certainly showed us a lot about Blackberry's and showed us how to email from "pin to pin" which is a really secure method of sending data. Gavin has informed us that we can schedule an advanced Blackberry instruction course and there will be an instructor in the Sault. We may consider this. Hey John Boy, once you have mastered that new laptop, want to try a Blackberry?

I have been appointed to the Executive Committee of the Sault Steelers and I have some plans for the future. I am on a fundraising campaign with Steve Roberts, so expect a visit from Steve. Steve says you can make out a cheque ahead of his visit, sign it and he will fill in the amount!

I hope that everyone read the Letter to the Editor from Dustin Jeffery's parents in the Sault Star on April 30th. Very impressive what they said about Sault Ste. Marie and we should all be very proud. The Greyhound fans will miss him too!

Wow! Those OGCA seminars are very tiring! I am worn out.
