Estimating
The Estimating Department has slowed down a bit as we have
several projects on our plate right now. Tom has taken over
the Project Management on the Co-Generation project for
Algoma Energy LP and Ken McLellan is our Superintendent.
Tom has been pricing some additional projects inside Algoma
Steel.
Tom is also pricing some concrete work for EPTCON at the
Gartshore GS near Wawa.
Ken Stitt has assumed the Project Management on the Collegiate
Heights Retirement Home Addition, KK (Ken Coventry) is the
Super on this job.
Ken S. and Mike are pricing a new hanger building in Elliot
Lake which closes on September 5th.
Mike has been fairly busy working on the Kenworth Truck
Centre foundations and building in Sudbury as well as the
Revert Building foundations and building at Inco. He is
also pricing a large steel building for a hoist house for
Inco at the Totten Mine site. This job closes on September
10th. He is also working on several budget prices and a
few projects in the early stages.
The press release that was made on Friday, September 7th
at Algoma University was a very important one regarding
solar energy. It was also very good news for us as well.
So stay tuned!
The North Bay project is still on track and the preliminary
architectural plans are complete. We are now into the structural,
mechanical and electrical design stage. M. R. Wright &
Associates and NorMech Engineering are part of our design-build
team on this one. Sid can hardly contain his excitement
and is looking forward to North Bay.

New Employees
We would like to welcome Tim Buchan to our team as a Project
Manager. Tim started on Tuesday, September 4th and brings
a huge amount of expertise with him. Tim recently worked
on the new Davey Home and has just completed the east end
Sewage Treatment Plant expansion for NAC as their PM. For
those of you who don't make the connection, Tim is the late
Harvey Buchan's son, (Samson Construction). Tim's Dad was
the ONLY Northern Ontario General Contractor to be the Chairman
of the OGCA (Ontario General Contractors Association). Harvey
demanded that the "O" be put back into the "OGCA";
the "O" referring to all of Ontario. We, in the
north, are still waiting for that to become a reality. Great
to have you with us Tim!
Welcome back to Nick Moore and Len Beaudin.

Wayne and Donnie are slugging away on this project. Blair
and Clinton have taken over as the Project Managers. Wayne
was on holidays for a week and Donnie covered for him; then
Donnie was on holidays for a week. Zak Seibt, Wayne's son
has now returned to school and left the boys on their own;
Zak how was dear old dad to work for? The building shell
is now up and MJM Roofing is installing the roof membrane.
The exterior brick was delivered to site and Gough Masonry
will start to install it soon. Henderson Metal, Ideal Contracting,
McLeod Bros. Mechanical, Phase Four Electrical and Vipond
Fire Protection are all on site working away. Wayne had
a Ministry of Labour inspection on August 23rd and everything
was satisfactory. Good job to everyone on site.

KKC is our Super on this project and Ken Stitt is the PM.
Ken will be receiving some assistance from Tim Buchan, our
newest PM, on the tendering of subtrades and materials.
Avery Construction has been working on the sitework and
our forces started the footings. We have been held up due
to a relocation of the Staff parking lot, which has now
been resolved. DNM Plumbing has been on site as our subtrade.
M.R. Wright & Associates is our testing company. We
should be able to get back to the foundations very soon.
Ryan, Bob, Randy, Jerry C. and Wayne M. have been working
on these. KKC is complaining that he needs subtrades and
we are having a bit of a time finding him some because everyone
is quite busy right now. Hey KKC, great job on the EdgeBuilder
reports, keep up the good work.

We've been waiting for some drawings on this project. Ken
McL. Is the Super and Tom is doing the PM work. This project
is moving extremely slow right now as we have been waiting
for rebar for several weeks now. We have had one big pour
so far; some of our guys had to work into the wee hours
of the morning. Gerry, Craig, JR, Jake, Andy, Chris, Mike
Mathieu and Duane have been some of our team on site. Hopefully,
we will receive the rebar in early September and then commence
work on a steady basis. Sorry, no pictures allowed.

EPTCON MacKay GS Concrete Repairs
Clinton attended the pre-construction meeting in August
and our guys are building the forms in our yard. We should
be on site this month and get started. More to follow in
October.
EPTCON Garden River Foundations
We have received the drawings for the transformer pad and
will be doing it this month. There are now two pads to install.
EPTCON Third Line Foundations
John was our foreman on this job; along with help from Chris
M and Nick they have completed the project; it consisted
of a transformer pad and some containment curbs.
Cooper Crane Building Renovations
Terry G is the foreman on this, Trevor and Chris P have
been working diligently on this project and it is almost
completed. They have installed the new roofing and replaced
the siding as well as the overhead doors. They are working
on trims, flashings and final clean up.
TSC Store Steel Erection
This project is progressing along to completion. All of
the roofing, most of the siding and liner panel have been
installed. They are working on trims and flashings as well
as the roof canopy; they still have to sheet the wood trusses.
Our crew consists of Jason Shuttleworth as our man in charge,
Justin, Mark, Cal, Tyler S, Joe, Scott M, Scott G, Ryan,
Chris M, and Chris P. Some of these guys are also working
on other jobs from time to time. This job should be completed
within the next few weeks.

Nexacor HVAC Upgrades
This job is still in progress and will hopefully be completed
by the end of this month.
ASI Women's Welfare Room Renovations
Ken C. will have this job completed shortly, Tom's PMing
this one too. It has been a very congested little area and
deliveries have held us up. ASI will be glad to have it
completed and turned over, so will Kenny.
MTO McKay Road Bridge Rehabilitation
Ray has received his B.C. fir timbers and is busy constructing
the replacement trusses. Once they are assembled, he will
take them apart and haul them to the site for reassembly.
Bob Wood is doing a review of Ray's temporary shoring plan
and we should be able to get started soon. Ken James will
be putting Ray and Northern Fencing, who will be doing the
new guard rails, through our safety orientation and the
site specific one. This project should be completed by mid
October.
Inco Revert Building, Copper Cliff
This Steelway building will be shipped in early October.
We will be going down to begin the foundations on September
10th. All of our guys working on this project have to update
their Norcat training and then have the Smelter orientation
before they can be allowed on site. The foundations consist
of large piers with a battered "counterfort" on
the backside. DMC Reinforcing will be doing the rebar for
us. Anmar will be doing the epoxy coatings to the structural
steel and then the erection. Once that is complete, our
crew will be doing the cladding. Mike and Blair are sharing
the PM duties, Dwayne is overseeing supervision and Gerry
B. will be the man in charge on site.
Kenworth Truck Centre Building,
Sudbury
We have finalized all of the changes on this building at
long last and can now complete the foundations. John, Nick,
Jerry and Wayne M. are the guys on site. Steelway now has
all of the information they require to start the approval
drawings and give us a revised delivery date. We quoted
the building as "supply only" but David Vitone
from Anmar would really like us to consider doing the cladding.
If we can free up a crew, we will consider this. David has
also discussed the pouring of the floor with us as well
as the loading dock and some concrete aprons. Mike and Blair
are sharing the PM duties on this project as well.
SAH On Call Rooms Renovation
Sid has taken over the finishing of this project. He has
Advance Interiors, Henderson Metal, McLeod Bros. Mechanical,
Phase 4 and Superior Tile on site all trying to get finished.
The delivery of the shower units has delayed our completion.
Sid is hoping to have this job completed in early September.

Beacon Marine Addition
Bob, Nick and Craig have completed the structural slab during
the last week of August. DMC did the rebar for us and Centis
was supposed to place and finish the floor. Unfortunately,
they were overbooked and could not make it. We borrowed
two of OCF's guys and poured it with our own forces. Nick
was our "main man" for the finishing. Dwayne was
on site to lend a helping hand. Good job guys. The Steelway
building should be delivered the week of October 8th and
our guys will be doing the erection and cladding.

I would like to discuss work refusals as they are laid
out in the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the
Construction Regulations (all of which fall under the Ministries
intent of promoting the Internal Responsibility System).
The green book speaks of worker refusals, but not a contracting
company or subtrades refusal process (in which a competent
supervisor has a concern for their crews) unless the intent
is meant to mirror the worker refusal?
For information under the Occupational Health & Safety
Act of Ontario for a work refusal see the following sections:
Act - Employer defined 1(1), Refusal to work 43

Would it not be nice to include in the next rewrite of
the construction act and regulations to also include a corporate
(company) refusal and a documented process for a good competent
supervisor refusal process on behalf of his crew/men. After
all is the intent and requirements of the act and regulations
not to make supervisors and all employers responsible for
the health and safety of all the workers under them and/or
reporting to them such as immediate staff, subcontractors
etc.
Ignorance of the laws and regulations is no defense. But
then again being reprimanded in any way, shape or form for
requesting information or for refusing unsafe work or conditions
by anyone (worker, supervisor, project manager, company,
owner, etc.) is also unacceptable, and must not be allowed
to happen.
Please let's all work hard and together to ensure every
worker goes home at the end of the day, healthy and safe.
On another super positive note our employees are doing
a great job; we are well recognized for our health and safety
work ethics, our safety program and the safety culture be
continue instill. I wish to thank each and every one of
you for all your efforts and commitment to health and safety.
From the worker, supervisor, project manager, estimator
and office staff my work is made easier by your continued
commitment. Let's not forget the subtrades that work for
us that also embrace our standards.
Never sacrifice safety for any reason or person.

We had a very good two day training course with Lisa from
EdgeBuilder, she is an excellent instructor. In attendance
were Ken S, Tom, Blair, Mike, Clinton, Tim, Fern, Shauna
and on occasion, Super Sid.
Sault College, in conjunction with the SSM Construction
Association and the Ontario General Contractors Association
are offering several fall courses with Gold Seal credits.
The courses are Construction Planning & Scheduling (Oct.
3-Dec. 5) and Construction Site Leadership (Sept. 26-Nov.
28), both courses carry 5 GS credits. The Construction Association
is also offering some one-night courses including Leadership,
Stress Management Tips and Conflict Resolution. For more
information please contact Sault College or Tammy at the
Construction Association. These are all very good courses.
As per our company requirement for management Ken McLellan,
Clinton Burmaster and Tim Buchan will all be applying for
the Gold Seal designations.
Dwayne did his on-line Norcat update and also had to update
his WHMIS as Norcat considers a WHMIS card as valid for
2 years only. Then DP had to answer the 456 questions on-line,
after which he has to actually do the written test with
another 40 questions. If all goes well he will get his photo
I.D. card and be good to go!

Please get out and donate, Canadian Blood Services is experiencing
a shortage. I was going for my 40th donation at September
clinic but I was deferred due to my blood pressure being
158 over 118. CBS will not allow anyone to donate blood
if their diastolic pressure is over 100. Ken James on the
other hand some how managed to make his 39th donation and
we are now tied. I will be trying to move ahead at the October
clinic. Good job Ken!
Tidbits
Here is a true or false quiz about bees and wasps, see how
you do.
1) To reduce the risk of being stung, you should avoid
bananas and bananas scented toiletries: all perfumes and
after shaves attract them
2) Sweat angers bees
3) The face is the most likely place for a bee or wasp to
sting
4) When a bee stings, it releases a chemical that alerts
other bees to attack
5) If you're being attacked by several stinging insects
at the same time and can't get indoors, you should jump
into water
6) If you're being attacked and you can't get indoors, you're
better off in a shaded area than an open area.
Answers: They're all true!
Here is another good one for all of us early risers. A
recent study covering 3,017 healthy adults between the ages
of 23 and 90, found that early risers had a greater risk
of heart conditions including hypertension and of having
strokes. The study also noted that early risers were usually
older. Hey John Hollingsworth, maybe we better start sleeping
in more or arriving at work no sooner than 8:00 AM!
And here's the best one, inhaling in the steam from a just-opened
package of butter popcorn can cause lung cancer if done
in great quantities. "Popcorn lung" apparently
is caused by the chemical "diacetyl" which is
a naturally occurring compound that gives butter its flavours
and is also found in cheese and wine. There has only been
one case reported and was it really caused by popcorn?

We have really struggled with this newsletter as we have
not had time to do a proper job and we are late in having
it launched. Hopefully we will have more time for the next
one.
As everyone is aware Frank Bruni left us last month to
go to work for Ellis Don on the new SAH hospital project.
Dave Watson and Nancy Brogno have recently left for the
same reason. We wish them well in their new employment;
however we wonder what their plans are in three years when
this project is over? Are they planning on relocating to
Southern Ontario?
I have been in discussions with Tim Smith from Ellis Don
with regards to what services we could offer them on the
new SAH project. Tim and I will meet in the near future
to discuss this further.
Fern, I and our Beagles flew into the Tribble Lake Resort
for the last time this year. We are quite concerned with
the lake level as it is down 28 inches from the normal water
line mark. We are thinking that a beaver dam has broken
and is draining the lake; we also think that there are no
veteran beavers around to re-build the dam. This is sounding
like the trades people situation, none to be had! The young
beavers are all starring in Bell commercials, Frank &
Gordon where are you two, natures calling!!!!! As usual,
we took Fern's boyfriend (the laptop), printer and lots
of work with us but did not get to it all. We had hoped
to finalize our Human Resources and Company Policies, but
ran out of time. We never even had the time to do any fishing!

I am reading a book called SAFETY 24/7, Building an Incident-Free
Culture (when I have time) and it is a very interesting
book. I may have some new ideas for Ken James to work on.
I had an interview with Fernie Tiflis for a feature article
on our company in "Construction Today". It's an
American publication out of Chicago. The article should
appear in the October issue. "Construction Today"
focuses on best practices and benchmarking; their readership
consists of top executives across the U.S. construction
industry.
At a recent Construction Association Board of Directors
meeting, we were informed that our Vice-President had resigned
from that position due to time constraints. I accepted the
position of President for a second consecutive term and
we elected Brenda Sywstun from Lafarge as the new Vice-President.
Brenda will be the Association's FIRST EVER female President.
Congratulation Brenda! Glen Foster is extremely thrilled
as he will now have to stay on for at least one more term
as Secretary-Treasurer. Brenda and I have asked him to stay
on for her term as well. Congratulations Glen!
Ken James and I experienced a video conference "test
run" with Mary Wademan of the Ontario General Contractors
Association. Mary had a webcam so we could see her but we
didn't manage to see her cheery face. Thanks to Matt Clark
of e/pop who has offered to send us a webcam and a headset
free of charge. Ken and I enjoyed the "dancing"
of someone at OGCA who thought we had signed out of the
conference!
The Mike Moore & Sons Annual Educational Fund for Post
Secondary Education for employees' children was awarded
to Tom Kulmala's children, Alicia and Mark. Alicia is attending
Cambrian College in Sudbury. Her career choice is in the
field of Dental Hygiene (a two year program); she looks
forward to embarking on her clinical career. Mark is attending
Algoma University College and perusing a degree in Psychology
(a three year program). He plans on applying his skills
to assisting individuals resolve the personal issues.

Our Employee Safety Committee had a luncheon date at North
82 on Wednesday, August 22nd. The lads chowed down, had
great food and timeout from work, briefly.
We have been experiencing a larger degree of trouble with
our internet service over the last six weeks; our initial
Shaw issues began in February 2007. Each time we called
Shaw their comments were that everything was just fine on
their end, the problem was ours. We have had to re-boot
our router every morning and several times a day over the
last six weeks. Derek Rice and Will Sayers from BDO have
been spending a lot of time with us trying to solve the
problem. We began a process of elimination at Derek's recommendation;
we switched routers several times with no luck; we removed
all remote access hook ups. We had Shaw test our cable line
and they repeatedly say it is fine. On Friday, September
7th they finally changed our modem and as of this release
our horrendous problems have ceased. We are seriously considering
having our lawyer present Shaw will a letter outlining our
costs over the last six weeks that include our IT costs
from BDO, our lack of internet access when Lisa was doing
her EB training on August 24th and 25th. If anyone else
in the Industrial Park is having modem/router problems we
would like to hear from you, so please call us.
