Estimating
Nothing new to report on the Solar Farm, we are beginning to wonder if this job will ever get going and time is running out.

We closed the Invasive Species Phase 1 demolition job on August 25th and we were fourth out of five tenders. The lowest price was less than half of the third price, wonder what they forgot? We are now working on Phase 2 which is the Design-Build tender for the Invasive Species Centre.

We were the low bidder on the Brookfield Power tender which is for some miscellaneous repairs to several of their Generating Stations up north. We will also be doing a small spray foam insulation job at Scott Falls GS.

Tim submitted pricing for the Tenaris Algoma Tubes settling pond liner replacement and the Tenaris security gates installation tenders. Tim thinks he will be awarded the liner replacement project. Mike and Tim met with Ellsin Environmental to review our proposal for their new building and have to provide some revised pricing.

We tried to get in on the pricing for the Phase 2 Service Corridor for Essar Steel but Essar only invited mechanical contractors. We tried to provide pricing to Anmar Mechanical but since this project was design-build, we required Anmar's design drawings which we never received.

Ken is working on the Phase 1 tender for Algoma University's new Bioscience & Technology Convergence Centre which includes the foundations and piling. Phase 2 will be out for tender in October.

Mike submitted a budget price for Essar Steel's proposed 90,000 square foot finishing mill which would not be built until next year. He is also working on a 120,000 square foot building and a 240,000 square foot building for a client up north plus two hanger buildings, one in Thunder Bay and one in Sudbury.

Ken submitted pricing on the Gartshore G.S. Emergency Stop Log Replacement which requires some diving operations.

We may be bidding some work in conjunction with another Contractor on the new North Street Secondary School which has a budget of about $36 million. More news on this one next month.

New Employees
Nothing new to report here. It is very slow right now. The guys are trickling back to work.

AELP Co-Gen Foundations

John and his dwindling crew consisting of Scott G, JR, Jerry C and Jake M are almost complete. They have about 230 metres of concrete to pour at the gas holding tank once it is complete. Some of John's crew have moved over to the cladding job.

AELP Co-Gen Cladding Installation

We have received the cladding for the Pump House and have started installation. John M and Jason S will be over seeing this project as the Supers with Clinton is the Project Manager. We hope to have it completed by the end of November or early December, weather permitting. They have most of the liner panel installed on the Pump House and have started the insulation and exterior cladding. Sorry, no pictures.

Indeck Keystone Energy Boiler Cladding

This job is now complete, we just have a little bit of siding to complete on a down day as it is to hot to do it when the boilers are operating.

GoodLife Fitness Club, North Bay

We had to drop out of the tendering on this one as we could not find a drywall and EFIS contractor in time to submit our price. I guess that they will have to go with a local North Bay General. We really thought that we would be doing this job as we have been working with GoodLife over the last three years on it. Well, I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

Brookfield Power, Gartshore G.S. Control Room

Dwayne is complete on this project and sent me a few pictures. We were also given a small job at Andrews G.S.

Federal Building Foundations
We have started to pour concrete on this project. Ken C is the Super and Ken S is the Project Manager. Ken C has Bob, Craig, Andy and Randy as his crew. Ken is having a "fun" time with S & T's Super who is a former drywaller turned Super. Ken C and Ken S say that he is a bit green when it comes to being a Superintendent.

Brookfield Power Generating Station Misc. Repairs
We have not started this job yet but should get going soon. It involves work at Scott G.S, Dunford G.S. and the Wawa Work Centre.

Brookfield Power- Scott Falls Spray Foam Insulation
We should be getting the P.O. for this project any day now and will schedule the work after that. Algoma Insulation will be doing the spray foam work for us.

As mentioned last month, we are in the process of recertifying our Superintendents and Field Employees safety training. While some of this is not legislated we are abiding by our own company procedures of recertification (internal) and the Trainers' requirements on his certificates.

We had 14 employees take Manlift recertification on August 28th with Rick Wilson and we will be setting up Forklift recertification training for about 8 of our guys and Hoisting & Rigging recertification for about 14 of our employees with Rick.

We are working with Paride from CSAO with regards to Fall Protection recertification for all of our guys and we hope to be able to include a bit of Aerial Rescue training with it. Paride will also be doing a Confined Space Awareness course for all of our Supers and Safety Reps which will involve 17 guys.

We have to send 4 employees for First Aid/CPR training as their certificates have expired and
are going to register approximately 10 guys in the CSAO Trenching Safety course; date to follow.

Approximately 6 of our guys will be attending the CSAO Basic Auditing Principals scheduled for November 25th and possibly 3 or 4 men in the CSAO Health & Safety Rep, Part 1.

All of this training and recertification should get us current given our company procedures and the Trainers' requirements. Even though there is no legislation for recertification of Fall Protection we feel it is imperative to have it. New regulations could have come out; new technology regarding Fall Protection could have been developed. Some of our employees have never been required to use Fall Protection on their jobsite AND there are now new concerns for fall victim trauma. As an employer we feel that is our obligation to see that all employees are recertified.

Clinton has yet to submit the minutes from their last meeting so there is nothing to report at this time.

Conventions & Social Events
Clinton, Jamie, John and Tim golfed in the SSM Construction Associations Annual Harvey Buchan Memorial Tournament on August 7th. They didn't provide me any pictures but I believe it did not rain for this one!

Fern and I were invited to the Steelers Celebration banquet at the Riuniti on September 4th. The pasta and meatballs were excellent and we all had a good time although there were not a lot of people attending. Guess they all had plans for the long weekend. Jim and Maureen Webb attended with us as Jim and Black Loon Millworks refurbished the NFC trophy. They did a very impressive job as you can see by the pictures.

Tibits

Here is a good one from Bob (our Safety Director)

Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day my wife and I went into town and went into a shop. We were only in there for about 5 minutes. When we came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. We went up to him and said, "Come on man, how about giving a senior citizen a break?"
He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him a Nazi turd. He glared at me and started writing out another ticket for worn tires. So my wife called him a shithead. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first one. Then he started writing out a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote.
Personally, we didn't care. We came into town by bus. We try to have a little fun each day now that we're retired. It's important at our age!

We now have 568,202 man hours with no Lost Time Injuries or a total of 4,023 days. We only have 431,798 man hours to go to reach our goal of 1,000,000 accident free hours. Great job guys and keep it up please!
We celebrated our 11th year with no Lost Time Injuries on August 24th, 2008 and we surpassed over 4,000 days with no LTI's. Quite an accomplishment and congratulations to all of our team, great job guys and keep up the good (safe) work!

We are also celebrating our 20th year in business on September 8th, 2009. Wow, it seems like only yesterday that we were working out of an office in my basement with Ken S, Dwayne, Ken C and Wayne. Cheers and here is to the next 20 years!
Dwayne, Ken, Ken and Wayne have really made the business what it is today along with Donnie C, Mike Mathieu and all the rest of our employees.
My Mother remembered the date and sent us celebration balloons. Thanks Mom.

Fern, Marion (Fern's Mom), Marg (my Mom), Kristie (Fern's daughter) and I attended the August 15th Sault Steelers vs. Kingston football game in which the Steelers whipped Kingston 59 to 0. We then attended the August 22nd NFC Championship game where the Steelers won a hard fought game by a score of 31-18 against the Tri-City Outlaws. The Steelers will now host the National Championship against Edmonton Stallions from the Alberta Football League here in the Sault on September 19th. Hope to see all of you there to support our Steelers!

Fern and I along with Barney, Storm and Coors (the cat, otherwise referred to as "the Black Thing") flew into our Tribble Lake Resort on August 27th. Rain was the order of the weekend but what else is new! Fern and I finished up the new window trim and built the window seat for the boys. Dwayne says he now guides his concrete pours by when we go to Tribble on the long weekends because it always rains!

It rained all day Friday and Saturday and the temperature was only 53° Fahrenheit for the high. It was a lazy day for everyone and I took the opportunity to write a bit of this newsletter. I had to repair the roof as one sheet was flapping in the wind and I had to keep the fireplace stocked as we had it going all day, each and every day except Tuesday, September 1st. The weather was sh-tty but I always look at the bright side of things and say "Well at least it didn't snow!"
Our lake is the lowest we have ever seen it, down about 44 inches and we had a hard time getting the Beaver floatplane into the dock as you can see by the pictures.

Fern and I went across the lake to investigate a possible broken beaver dam, maybe that's why Tribble is sooo low. After 3 hours in the dense bush (glad we took flagging tape to find our way back) we found nothing that resembled a broken beaver dam. We did see a waterless bay with old deadfall and mud in it and lots of wild animal tracks.

As always, the Resort served excellent meals, we had rigatoni & meatballs with garlic buns, tuna steaks and salad, New York strip loin steaks with lobster tail and crab legs and Rack of Lamb with corn on the cob. We also had several orders of escargot. The food is always great as is the chef (me) and the company (Fernie & the boys).

This year our company Educational Fund recipients were Scott Gillespie's daughter, Jodie and Ken Coventry's daughter, Karley.
Jodie is enrolled at Sault College in the General Arts and Liberal Studies program which is affiliated with Lake State University and advancing to a degree in Early Childhood Education. Upon completion Jodie plans to travel to Australia and obtain a teaching position in conversational English.
Karley is enrolled at Niagara College which is affiliated with Brock University. She is in the General Arts and Science program as she feels it gives her broader educational options and career choices.
Good Luck to both of them!

Our girl Scarlett who works in the office had some new arrivals in her family as well. Scarlett provided us with a few pictures of the new puppies.

I just had to include a note about our new 10 foot metal brake and slitter that we recently purchased. Dwayne is very impressed as he says he has been trying to get me to buy them for the last 10 years!

I came across an interesting article by accident the other day. It involved a Toronto Maple Leaf player (Bashing Bill Barilko) from years gone by, too long for me to remember. He was killed in a bushplane accident with very mysterious details surrounding the crash. The plane crashed on August 27, 1951 and a "ghost plane" was seen flying over Timmins several days later. The plane was found 11 years later and the entire event remains a mystery to this day. It is very interesting reading!
